About Today Readings

St Bernard

Ezekiel 36:23-28. I will pour clean water on you and wash away all your sins – Ps 50(51):12-15, 18-19. Matthew 22:1-14.

Invitation for absolutely everyone

Weddings are great. They can also be a headache, especially if there are delicate invitations to negotiate. It may be unwise to seat certain family members near each other. You may even breathe a sigh of relief when one or two can’t make it. I wonder about the king who is holding a wedding feast for his son in today’s parable. The people who go off to their farm or their business or even beat up the people bringing the invitation don’t sound like much fun. They all have their priorities upside-down. Crossroads create interesting meetings and that is where the king knows he will find people open to the real adventure of life and of faith. The ones who have hope rather than entitlement. The hall is filled with ‘good and bad alike’. That is the kingdom. Pope Francis used to say, todos, todos, todos. Absolutely everyone. Even you and me. Even the people who refused if they changed their mind.
