About Today Readings

Isaiah 7:10-14. Psalm 23(24):1-6. Luke 1:26-38.
Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory – Psalm 23(24):1-6.

‘I am the handmaid of the Lord.’

Fra Angelico’s painting of the Annunciation depicts the Angel Gabriel kneeling before Mary and Mary sitting before Gabriel. They are presented as equals, divided only by the formal columns of the building in which they meet. Mary’s hands are crossed reverently and protectively near the place that the baby Jesus will soon be.

By her calm posture it seems she has been waiting for Gabriel’s message. Yet with her still body and pensive face, Mary’s heart and mind seem to be turned inward, to the enormity of what is being asked. What might she be thinking? Am I really capable of this? Her response to Gabriel is certain: ‘I am the handmaid of the Lord … let what you have said be done to me.’
