About Today Readings

Ecclesiasticus 48:1-14. Let the just rejoice in the Lord – Psalm 96(97):1-7. Matthew 6:7-15.

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him

How we pray depends on our image of God. My Chicago spiritual director, the late John Dillon SJ, spoke of a time he was playing baseball, with his father watching from the stands. Catching his father’s eye, he realised his dad was thinking ‘the little devil’s going to try for a home run’, which he did. That became John’s dominant image of the Father – one who enjoyed him.

If I know that the Father enjoys me, that changes how I relate to him. The Father loves me as I am and delights in me. I don’t have to prove anything. I can bring my needs, fears and concerns to him, confident that he understands and wants what is best for me. I can trust that I will be sustained and strengthened to face whatever challenges and difficulties come my way.
