About Today Readings

Jeremiah 17:5-10. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Ps 1:1-4, 6. Luke 16:19-31.

We are required to nurture our relationship with God

During this time of Lent, we have the chance to cultivate, a little more attentively, our capacity to receive the Lord. Sometimes the demands of life leave us as ‘dry scrub in the wastelands’, with limited ability to notice God’s movement in our lives. If we put our trust in the Lord, though, we can be like a tree with deep roots. The image in today’s reading from Jeremiah suggests a capacity to meet life’s challenges if our disposition is grounded in our relationship with God.

Today’s Gospel gives a striking warning of what is at stake in our disposition. If we take for granted the good that comes our way, if we are not concerned for our neighbour who is suffering, we condemn ourselves. Instead, we are called to live our lives, with all the good and bad that we receive along the way, grounded in our relationship with God.
