About Today Readings

Ephesians 3:14-21. The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 32(33):1-2, 4-5, 11-12, 18-19. Luke 12:49-53.

I have come to cast fire on the earth

Irene: Jesus, you ought to be ashamed of yourself. You sound just like a terrorist, wanting to fire-bomb society and divide families by radicalising them. Even if you feel like that, you should keep your feelings to yourself. Stick to the Good News of peace and of mutual love.

Jesus: I wasn’t advocating violence and division, Irene. I was reflecting on my own experience and calling. I preached a God of love and healing, not of fear and punishment, and a life of trust and self-sacrifice, not of selfishness and apathy. But the authorities want to kill me; my friends and family distance themselves from me. Should I give up?

Irene: Not exactly, Jesus, but shouldn’t you be more prudent – heal people during the week and not on the Sabbath, build alliances with the authorities, dine with respectable people and speak of peace?

Jesus: Thanks, Irene. Is that all that God asks of you and me, though?
