Jesus is placed right in front of us
Revelation, or the Apocalypse, is a startling and troubling book. One of its most jagged edges is that in it we confront stark questions about Jesus. In the Gospels there are many passages that cause us to dwell on the mystery of who he is and what he is up to. There are also a handful of sharp, thunder-clap affirmations of his divinity. Along with these we are invited to follow him, to try to live as he does and teaches. All of this is couched in stories, parables and dialogue that are just complex enough that we can carve out some wiggle room as to what it means for us. Revelation is nothing like that. Here Jesus is placed right in front of us, in full glory. We are told Jesus is worthy to rule the world. What about me? My heart? My wallet? My relationships? Is he worthy?
