God knows what we need

Compared to the enormous, universe-encompassing God, we human beings seem so small and insignificant. How can we ever think God might pay attention to us, let alone answer our prayers?

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus tells his disciples that there’s no point trying to pray louder and longer. The force and number of our words aren’t important, because God already knows what we need. What’s important, what gets God’s attention, is how we are oriented towards those around us, particularly those who sin against us. If we are loving and merciful, then God will be loving and merciful to us.

Contemplate this for a moment. A being so unimaginably huge knows us so intimately that we have no need to voice our intentions, and is so selfless in their love for us that what matters most to them is how we care for those around us. This is one of the most miraculous things about our faith.
