Christianity for all
Christianity is frequently described in popular discourse as a European religion or one that belongs to white people. Although understandable, this is an egregious error. Christianity obviously grew out of Judaism, and centres on the worship of a Palestinian Jewish man. Christianity spread in all directions from Isarel, among and beyond diasporic Jewish communities. The Ethiopian man from our first reading is just one of the countless Black and Brown Christians who likely made up a majority of us for centuries. Only the rise of Islam shifted Christianity’s centre of mass definitively into Europe temporarily. Today the faith is again Good News for people of every tribe and tongue, not the property of one region. I find it wondrous to reflect that I only know of Jesus because of a great chain of witnesses such as Phillip, stretching back to the first disciples in Judah and spanning around the world.
