St Polycarp
Deuteronomy 30:15-20. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 9:22-25.
Take up your cross and follow me
Bombo: I’m surprised at you, Jesus. You are clearly an attractive person – so many people follow you. And then you break every rule in the leadership book. You talk gloom and doom, and tell your followers to expect the same. Be positive, man, and make your disciples think positive.
Jesus: Alas, I didn’t have any HR manuals, Bombo. But it was God’s word and God’s way I was preaching – serious stuff that can get you killed. You need to love enough to be ready to lose your life. That’s the truth. Do you believe in the truth, Bombo?
Bombo: It’s overrated, Jesus. Always causes problems if you want to succeed. It’s for people who want to be martyrs. That’s OK for you, Jesus, but it’s hard to sell unless you water it down.
Jesus: But if you love people deeply, Bombo, won’t you want them to live fully and not wrap themselves in cotton wool?
Bombo: What is love, Jesus?
