About Today Readings

St Clement I; St Columban

1 Maccabees 2:15-29. To the upright I will show the saving power of God – Psalm 49(50):1-2, 5-6, 14-15. Luke 19:41-44.

Jesus joins with us in our suffering

Cordelia: I feel for you, Jesus, as you look down on and weep over its coming destruction. And I am touched by your sympathy for all the people who will die so terribly. You open my heart to so many people whose lives have been destroyed in Ukraine, Myanmar and elsewhere in our war-torn world. But why do you blame them for the horrors to come? They didn’t do anything wrong, surely.

Jesus: You have a big heart Cordelia, and no one deserves to be treated like that. But if the whole people, from the poorest to the most influential had heard God’s word and changed their lives, those terrible things would not have happened. They would have made peace, not war, yielded to others and not fought them, returned hatred with love.

Cordelia. No, Jesus, you can’t dismiss their suffering just like that.

Jesus: Well, Cordelia, what if I join them?
