Journey to understanding
Today’s Reading makes me think about Aboriginal Dreamtime stories. Those of us not initiated into the culture might hear the stories and be granted some understanding of their meaning. But only those who are fully initiated are allowed access to the deeper and more profound meanings those stories hold.
Jesus makes the same distinction between his disciples and those in the crowd who gather to listen to him. The parables he shares are the first step on the journey to understanding. The disciples have been given much greater access to the mysteries of the kingdom, and will be charged with leading those who choose to follow much further down the path.
Our journey in faith has many similarities with that traditional Aboriginal cultural journey. The more time we spend partaking in the Eucharist and the other sacraments, and the more we then journey with Christ through the Gospels, the deeper our insights about faith become.
