I have come to bring fire to the earth
Winifred: Jesus, you seemed overwrought when you spoke of bringing fire and division. I thought you came to bring peace and reconciliation, not conflict.
Jesus: Well, Winifred, perhaps I was emotional. I saw that my preaching was stirring up hostility and that I would be killed if I kept going. My Father called me to show the path to life and peace for everyone, but people were frightened by God’s overwhelming love, and they hated me for preaching it.
Winifred: I understand that, Jesus, but coming to divide people and families! How is that Good News?
Jesus: I didn’t want division, Winifred, but those who heard the Good News of God’s love and of God’s call to follow my way became anxious. They saw God was offering something more, but they were afraid. That divided families. Haven’t you sometimes had to follow a dream your family disagreed with?
