2 Kings 24:8-17. For the glory of your name, O Lord, deliver us – Ps 78(79):1-5, 8-9. Matthew 7:21-29.
Develop habits of the heart
Today’s readings are a warning to those who carry the name of God on their lips but don’t revere God in the works of their hands. One might think of those who profess a God-given mission while heedlessly bombing foreign peoples. Or closer to home, those who claim to stand for ‘Christian civilisation’ while ignoring the plight of the most needy and vulnerable around them.
Jesus highlights that how we respond to bigger issues begins with our response to smaller ones. If we follow and act on Jesus’ words in our daily lives – by showing care for the vulnerable and needy – we develop habits of the heart that can help us tackle these bigger questions. If we don’t act with charity to those close to us, there’s no way we can act with charity on a larger scale.
