About Today Readings

The Annunciation of the Lord

Isaiah 7:10-14, 8:10. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will – Psalm 39(40):7-11. Hebrews 10:4-10. Luke 1:26-38.

I am the handmaid of the Lord

In today’s Gospel, Mary takes centre stage. She provides a clear example of an ordinary young woman, who is delivered big, unexpected news, and subsequently overcomes her confusion, fear and worry by completely trusting in God’s plan for her. It’s almost as if in those short moments after hearing the angel’s news, Mary took some deep breaths, took stock of the situation, and recognised a deeper voice in her heart, the voice of God. Mary was open to hearing and receiving the call of God; she found courage and trusted God. How do we deal with big news, or unexpected events? Do we let the fear, anxiety and worry overtake us, or do we take some time to converse with God, to hear the stirrings in our heart, and to trust? Are we open to the call of God in our lives as Mary was? Today I pray that I may open my heart just that little bit more.
