About Today Readings

Haggai 1:1-8. The Lord takes delight in his people – Ps 149:1-6, 9. Luke 9:7-9.

Who is this man?

Prudence: It’s unfair that the Herods of this world get such bad press, Jesus. After all, they have to snuff out threats to the peace. Having a few babies killed and dragging you in for interrogation might have been unfortunate but necessary. All our defence experts know that.

Jesus: All our rulers knew that too, Prudence, and they were the death of me. But Pilate knew God’s word and had a bad conscience about killing John the Baptist. It was expedient, so he did it.

Prudence: Yes, Jesus, but you should have gone to see him. You might have changed his life.

Jesus: Pilate liked celebrity, Prudence, and wanted to impress other celebrities with his power. He respected only those with greater power. If I had gone and spoken honestly to him, he would have jailed me as he did John. Anyone who sees persons as expendable and not as made in God’s image loses their humanity.
