Genesis 16:1-12, 15-16. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good – Ps 105(106):1-5. Matthew 7:21-29.
Listen for God’s voice
The pain of infertility can be devastating, leading to desperation and difficult choices. I wonder how Sarai felt as she gave her servant, Hagar, to Abram? Perhaps she was torn between hope, regret and jealousy? Hagar, though able to bear a child, suffered rejection and fear. Their story echoes struggles still faced today by women leaving them feeling replaced, abandoned or unseen. Yet, in Hagar’s darkest moment, an angel appears, offering reassurance and hope.
This encounter reminds us that even in uncertainty, God is present. The psalm calls us to give thanks for his enduring mercy, and Jesus urges us to build our lives on a firm foundation, not shifting sands. Trusting in God’s plan, even when we cannot see the way forward, is an act of faith. Like Hagar, may we listen for God’s voice in the wilderness and find strength in his promises.
