About Today Readings

Romans 6:19-23. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 12:49-53.

Following God brings us true freedom

Today’s first reading and psalm make me reflect on how much I like to cling to my addictions and vices. I know that I would be happier without them. I know I would be more fulfilled if I were to place God at the centre of my life. And yet I swipe the shiny screens more than a healthy amount. I say mean things about people behind their backs. I stay up late and then am cranky to my kids the next day. And I don’t want to give any of it up.

We want freedom to pursue our vices, but this is never true freedom. It’s like having the freedom to walk into a cage or pick at a scab. Following God is what brings us true freedom.

So why do I have to keep learning this same lesson again and again?
