About Today Readings

St Louis Grignion de Montfort

Acts 8:26-40. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy – Psalm 65(66):8-9, 16-17, 20. John 6:44-51.

Jesus is the bread from heaven

In this period of Eastertide, the Resurrection is evident in all the readings. The story of Philip opening the word for the Ethiopian eunuch shows the way followed by RCIA candidates. The word is opened by faith-filled people, a sacrament is given and everything changes. Baptism is open to everyone in the world who comes to believe in Jesus the Christ and through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus all are redeemed. The psalm proclaims that all the earth, not just a chosen few, will call out to God. The Gospel leads us further. You can only come to the Father if you are called, and if you find that call in your heart, God will teach you. God will be evident in those who reach out to open the word in faith and love. Jesus is the bread from heaven, the one who will nourish everyone open to receive and it will be administered by those who also believe. Our Christian faith is not one that can be nourished alone and in individual spaces, it belongs in community.
