St Gregory of Narek
Ecclesiasticus 5:1-10. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Mark 9:41-50.
Help me to be honest about my own failings
Today’s readings are about sin. It’s not very fashionable to talk about sin these days. We skirt around it. Using that word makes us feel judgmental or like some sort of puritan. But there are problems with removing the word from our vocabulary as well – it limits our capacity to discuss morality.
True humility means being able to recognise my own failings and sins. It’s not about beating myself up and wringing my hands, but it’s also not about being in denial. Without being able to acknowledge that sin exists, that it’s a ‘thing’, we can’t lead a full and moral life.
Reconciliation provides me with a regular (OK: semi-regular) opportunity to take a frank look at how I’m living my life and where sin is creeping in. Lord, help me to be honest and open in acknowledging my own failings.
