Open the imagination

Why does Jesus speak in parables? Why is a story so much more effective than a discussion on doctrine? When we utter ‘once upon a time’ a hush falls over the gathering, a story begins. There is something in a story that opens our imagination and allows us to ‘see’ things that we have not seen before. In Matthew’s Gospel Jesus’ teaching centres on the kingdom of heaven and the way to open the understanding is to open the imagination. Can we imagine a place where everyone treats each other with respect and love? And so, the kingdom of heaven in like a mustard seed, it is like a treasure hidden in a field, is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. We have to enter the story to be able to hear the teaching, we have to learn to listen with our heart and be open to the Spirit.
