St Augustine
1 Thessalonians 3:7-13. Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy! – Ps 89(90):3-4, 12-14, 17. Matthew 24:42-51.
He is coming at an hour you do not expect
Today we are implored to be ready, for we do not know the hour. How often do we spend in the moment? Instead, I find myself dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Am I ready right now? What if ‘the hour’ was in five minutes’ time?
A lot of the time, I look to the near future as being the time when I’ll finally be on top of things. Things will settle down in a month or two. When the kids are older I’ll have more time. After this deadline I’ll be able to breathe a bit more. When I retire, things will be different. But what if the only time is now? What if I do not know the day or the hour?
Lord, help me to grow in holiness – right this minute, please.
