Jeremiah 18:1-6. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob – Psalm 145(146):2-6. Matthew 13:47-53.
The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet
Drawing on the experience of his hearers, Jesus outlines in a series of parables what is expected of those who aspire to a place in the kingdom of God. As his teaching makes clear, entry will be granted to those who respond to God’s plan for his creation in a positive and loving way by leading a virtuous life and will be denied to those who do not.
Like the fishermen who separate the bad fish from the good fish, we need to examine our own lives and root out whatever militates against our friendship with God and with one another. With this in mind, we might avail ourselves more regularly of the graces of the sacrament of reconciliation. ‘Mould us, O God, in the image of Jesus, as the potter fashions the clay.’
