1 Peter 2:2-5, 9-12. Come with joy into the presence of the Lord – Ps 99(100):1-5. Mark 10:46-52.
Eyes of faith
We are invited to be nourished by spiritual milk and come together as spiritual stones to join with Christ, the cornerstone once rejected by the builders (Ps 118). The language in 1 Peter is gentle and joyful, encouraging us in our relationship with God, not simply as individuals, but as part of a community of witness and worship; the Church.
Christ, the rejected cornerstone, listens to and liberates those who are rejected. In Mark’s Gospel, the blind beggar, Bartimaeus, is being a pest, shouting to get Jesus’ attention. In his humbled and reduced state, he has no fear of failure – after all, how could his life get worse? Mercy, kindness and dignity meet in Jesus, who asks Bartimaeus ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ Bartimaeus wants to see again, but Jesus knows this beggar already ‘sees’ in the most powerful sense: with the eyes of faith. Healed and whole, Bartimaeus follows Jesus.
