Apocalypse 18:1-2, 21-23; 19:1-3, 9. Blessed are they who are called to the wedding feast of the Lamb – Psalm 99(100):2-5. Luke 21:20-28.
We are called to be one with God
Both the reading from Apocalypse and Luke speak of apocalyptic events. The visionary first reading is matched by Luke’s description of the end times. Much of this description comes from Mark’s Gospel and it was obviously a concern for the early Christians. Scholars accept that Luke’s Gospel was written after the fall of Jerusalem in 70CE so the memory of the destruction would be clear. Amid all the destruction in both readings there is the beauty of Psalm 99(100). We are called to the wedding feast of the Lamb, the one who is glorified in the visions of the Apocalypse, the same one who is called the Son of Man and who will come in a cloud with power and great glory. Even though these times we live in might seem nihilistic, we are still called to be one with God and to approach the Temple, Jesus, with great joy, bringing with us those we can.
