St Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Exodus 40:16-21, 34-38. How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God! – Ps 83(84):3-6, 8, 11. Matthew 13:47-53.

I am the Resurrection and the life

Earlier this year Pope Francis approved changing the liturgical feast of St Martha to include her sister and brother, Mary and Lazarus. He approved the change after ‘considering the important evangelical witness they offered in welcoming the Lord Jesus into their home, in listening to him attentively, (and) in believing that he is the resurrection and the life’.

‘In the household of Bethany, the Lord Jesus experienced the family spirit and friendship of Martha, Mary and Lazarus, and for this reason the Gospel of John states that he loved them’, according to the decree. Lord I pray to be as Martha and always welcome you generously to my home; to listen to you attentively like Mary and to believe in the Resurrection as you so demonstrated with Lazarus.
