The rock of truth
In seven ‘I am . . .’ statements in St John’s Gospel, Jesus declares himself to be the bread of life; the light of the world; the gate for the sheep; the good shepherd; the resurrection and the life; the way, the truth and the life; and the true vine. He is all of those things for us.
Seeking his disciples’ understanding of his person and his ministry, Jesus asks them, ‘Who do you say I am?’ This question is also addressed to me not just once but often throughout my life. Everything hinges on my response.
If I ask God the same question, I may expect to hear, ‘You are my beloved son or daughter’, hopefully also, ‘in whom I am well pleased’.
