Take nothing with you
Jesus sends the Twelve out in pairs. There is an invitation in this commissioning; an invitation to consider our need for community as we live and share our faith. We need companions on the way to sustain and console us; to keep us honest. We cannot ‘go it alone’.
The commissioning of Solomon by his father David, described in the reading from the first book of Kings, is a reminder that communities of faith live over time, across generations. In hearing this faithful commission by David, we recall that at times, maybe even often, those who pass on the faith do so having failed to live up to all their relationship with God might have invited.
Today you might take some time to give thanks for your companions in faith, those who journey with you now, and those who have gone before you, having lit the way.
