Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it
Being a follower of Jesus is not always easy. From the outset, Jesus is clear about this. Indeed, he leads the way. He is willing to undergo rejection by all ‘the world’ adulates. He is willing to take up his cross. But not, not for Jesus or his followers, for some nihilistic purpose. The Christian takes up her cross out of a deep relational integrity. She does not want to lose herself, or what is most dear to her, her relationship with Jesus. In following the way of the cross, the way of Jesus, the Christian recognises the denials this entails are for a fuller yes to self-integrity and relationship with God.
So, counterintuitively, it is allowing the death of certain of our attachments, especially the attachment to a false self and an incomplete image of God, that allows us to say that ‘yes’ to life.
