About Today Readings

St Martin de Porres

Philippians 3:3-8. Let hearts rejoice who search for the Lord – Psalm 104(105):2-7. Luke 15:1-10.

Do we recognise ourselves as lost?

Jesus turns everything upside down. As for Paul, so for us: all that seems an advantage becomes a disadvantage if it gets in the way of the greatest advantage of all, knowing Jesus Christ.

We have in today’s Gospel an image of those who crave to know Jesus, the sinners and tax collectors. Those who are outcast and despised. When challenged on spending time with them, Jesus ‘doubles down’. It is precisely the ‘lost sheep’, or the ‘lost drachma’, the lost person whom Jesus has come for. Such a person might be ready to have their whole lives turned upside down.

Do I have the humility to recognise myself as lost? Do I recognise my need to seek to know Jesus, even as he will turn everything upside down?
