St Gregory the Great
1 Corinthians 3:18-23. To the Lord belongs the earth and all that fills it – Ps 23(24):1-6. Luke 5:1-11.
They signalled to their companions in the other boat to come and help them
Today is the Feast of St Gregory the Great, a significant 6th century pope, who played a key role in developing the Roman liturgy. He ensured that the church gave away as much as it could to people in poverty, and was canonised by popular acclaim. However, in 1969, his feast day moved from 12 March (his death date) to 3 September 2026. That supplanted the Feast of St Phoebe, also celebrated on that day. She was the only named Deacon of a church (cenchreae) in the bible, who carried St Paul’s Letter to the Romans to Rome. We have much to recover in sharing her history. Like the two boats of the Gospel, sharing their catch, may we be inspired by these two saints – Gregory and Phoebe.
