Are we listening?
Today’s pericope from Matthew gives us the last of the kingdom parables. At first reading it sounds like justice and wrath handed out by a vengeful God. If you are not good you will be thrown away. This kind of judgment has marred our Christian behaviour for centuries. The judgment of others and their condemnation have injured and damaged many.
A different reading could draw us closer to what Jesus was saying. When the end of time comes, it will not be us who decide who is chosen or not, it will be God who will direct the angels to make the selection. Earlier in Matthew’s Gospel (7:1) Jesus warns us not to judge. Leave all judgments to God and the kingdom of heaven on earth will become a closer reality. At the end, Jesus checks that they are listening and understanding for that is the characteristic of a disciple. Are we listening? Do we understand?
