Your sins are forgiven; get up and walk
Think for a moment about the people carrying the paralysed person in today’s Gospel. They are wonderful characters and, as so often in scripture, you need to pray between the lines. We know that many of the people in Jesus’ home town were suspicious of him because he wasn’t prepared to fit into the role he had been expected to play for as long as they had known him. In fact, some tried to kill him. So, the people carrying the man on the stretcher have a special kind of faith. The chances are that Jesus had known them since they were children. For the sake of their friend, they are prepared to stick their necks out and bring the sick person to Jesus. The reading tells us that Jesus was moved by their faith, not just the faith of the sick person. Their love was prepared to take the kind of risk that frightened the scribes.
