About Today Readings

Genesis 17:3-9. The Lord remembers his covenant for ever – Psalm 104(105):4-9. John 8:51-59.

I will establish my Covenant between myself and you, generation after generation

On a bridge near my home, countless couples have attached and left locks of all shapes and sizes. Immediately we recognise the symbol of their love, which is fastened tight and will last eternally. Today’s readings talk about the Covenant and the word that lasts far beyond physical death. I wonder what might make up our own ‘locks’ in our relationships with God? Do we have a sense of eternal love and commitment, that opens us to love and commitment with all of God’s creation? If so, God’s promise is that we will be fruitful and will never see death. Perhaps we might re-commit ourselves to God today, and make an inventory of what is eternal and lasting in and beyond our own life.
