About Today Readings

St Andrew

Romans 10:9-18. Their message goes out through all the earth – Psalm 18(19):2-5. Matthew 4:18-2

Follow me, and I will make you fishers of my people

St Andrew is mentioned in 12 places in the Bible. He is the brother of Simon Peter, though not part of Jesus’ ‘inner circle’ of Peter, James and John. At one time, however, he joins them to ask about the Temple. At other times he acts as a go-between, for Peter, Philip and the boy who has the five loaves and two fish. Finally, he is always listed as one of the Twelve, the first Apostles. He is called from fishing to ‘catching people’ and he went on to preach Jesus’ message until his martyrdom. Perhaps St Andrew can inspire us to make connections. It may be to help them connect with God in prayer or celebration. It may be to share their gifts and talents. How can I be a go-between today?
