Healing begins with spiritual wounds

I spent some time many years ago at a home for alcoholic men. Each morning, the men would gather for Mass. The most moving time at the Mass was the prayers of the faithful, when the men would often recount stories from their lives and ask forgiveness for things they had done and people they had wounded. Often, they would share the same story again and again, burdened as they were by the sins they carried.

There was physical healing taking place in that home, but there was also spiritual healing. While many might say that the physical healing was most important, I’m not so sure. In today’s Gospel, Jesus first addresses the paralysed man’s sins, not his physical disability. It’s clear that for him healing starts with addressing the spiritual wounds we carry.
