About Today Readings

Colossians 1:9-14. The Lord has made known his salvation – Ps 97(98):2-6. Luke 5:1-11.

Are we willing to be inconvenienced by God?

Peter walks a rocky road. He made many mistakes. He tried to protect Jesus from God’s plan, saying ‘This must not happen to you’. He refused to have his feet washed and then denied he even knew Jesus. You might wonder if he really understood Jesus. But Jesus understood him. Jesus saw his heart. Look at today’s Gospel. Peter is a small businessman who has just finished a long night’s work with little to show for it. Nevertheless, he was willing to let himself be inconvenienced so he could help a stranger, agreeing to let Jesus use his boat as a platform.

In a few lines, this story explores many of the nooks and crannies of our Christian calling. It asks if we are willing to be inconvenienced by God. Peter wanted to finish work and go home. We might feel the same when a friend rings at an inconvenient time or someone needs a kind word when we are already overburdened. Each day we are called to put out into the deep.
