About Today Readings

St Agatha

1 Kings 2:1-4, 10-12. Lord, you are exalted over all – 1 Chronicles 29:10-12. Mark 6:7-13.

One power, one way

Today’s readings remind us that the Kingdom of God is not of this world, and yet it rules over this world. In the first reading, Solomon succeeds David to become the sovereign of Israel. In the Gospel we see Jesus sending his disciples out with ‘authority over unclean spirits’. He is sovereign over a different kingdom, but the Gospel shows that his power is still real – if anything, it is even more real than that of Solomon.

We don’t live in a time of kingdoms anymore, so it’s easy to dismiss this way of seeing Jesus. But it’s perhaps still a helpful way to look at God, particularly in times of political division and unrest. The earthly powers might strive for supremacy, but there’s still one power, one Way, that remains more real than any of them.
