About Today Readings

1 John 3:11-21. Let all the earth cry out to God with joy – Psalm 99(100). John 1:43-51.

Our love is to be something real and active

The first letter of John grounds love in the reality of our broken world. Love is not, and cannot be, ‘just words or mere talk, but something real and active’. In the afterglow of Christmas, we are invited to make love real and active in our lives. The authenticity of this action will be grounded in our following the Christ-child who invites us to follow.

‘Follow me’, says Jesus in today’s Gospel. An invitation to follow one born in a manger, from the provincial, no-good town of Nazareth. Not terribly appealing in worldly terms. But following this man, ‘you will see heaven laid open’. A startling claim. We should let it reverberate. Heaven is laid open when this man, Jesus, enters the messy reality of the world and loves as only God can love. Love that is real and active. Love that risks all, sacrifices all, and so gains all.
