About Today Readings

Amos 7:10–17. Psalm 18(19):8–11. Matthew 9:1–8.

The judgments of the Lord are true and all of them just—Psalm 18(19):8–11.

‘Go and prophesy to my people Israel.’

‘Which is easier, to say, “Your sins are forgiven”, or to say, “Get up and walk”?’ We may wonder whether any of the scribes had an answer to that question.

It is pretty clear that making either statement had never occurred to them. They were not known for their compassion.

Both statements challenge them to see the paralytic as human and in need of compassion rather than one deserving of his ‘punishment’.

How do I see Jesus and his deeds of power? Am I in need of healing? Am I a perpetual critic and observer? Am I one who glorifies God?
