The Transfiguration of the Lord
Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14. The Lord is king, the most high over all the earth – Ps 96(97):1-2, 5-6, 9. 2 Peter 1:16-19. Matthew 17:1-9.
Are we open to God’s signs?
In our disenchanted world today, there’s not much credence given to visions and prophesy. Few respectable people sit around talking about and analysing their dreams as portents of the future.
Today’s readings are from a world where prophesy was alive and relevant. The Transfiguration, which brought to life the vision in the Book of Daniel in the first reading, was taken by Jesus’ followers as confirmation that he was the prophesised Messiah of the Jewish people. It can be hard for us to understand this through our modern perspective – it requires a leap of faith.
I wonder how many signs from God we miss because our eyes are not open to them?
