We are carriers of the Good News

St Paul’s words in the letter to Timothy suggest something fundamental to the life of the Christian. We are carriers of the Good News. By our lives we invite others to hear this news. We bear it, hopefully in our hearts and in our conduct. ‘Love is shown more in deeds than in words’, wrote St Ignatius of Loyola. We carry this news imperfectly, sometime shakily, but we are called to do so in our actions.

Jesus’ own words in today’s Gospel suggest that the Good News is grounded, and grows, through love. Love of God, love of neighbour and, implicitly, love of self. If we enact our love, we are, as Jesus says of his interlocutor, ‘not far from the kingdom of God’. Which is, after all, the Good News.
