God’s abundant care

The story of Israel’s time in the desert is a story of cycles of doubt and despair followed by God’s expression of abundant care for his people. Our faith lives can be this way. No matter what we have been given, we can find ourselves dissatisfied. We close in on ourselves, nursing our expectations for what should have been and should be. The blessing of our lives is that God continues to show up for us.

By the waters of Meribah, God has Moses and Aaron show that he brings water forth from a rock so they may drink – an expression of his fidelity. Later God shows his fidelity by sending Jesus Christ, whom Peter identifies as ‘the Son of the living God’. We may struggle in our relationship with Jesus, but through the Holy Spirit he keeps showing up for us. Can we welcome him with an open heart?
