About Today Readings

Ss Perpetua & Felicity

Jeremiah 7:23-28. If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts – Psalm 94(95):1-2, 6-9. Luke 11:14-23.

Chance to promote unity

It can be frustrating when our actions are misunderstood, or when something we’ve said or done is done with good intentions and is interpreted in an ungenerous light. Here, Jesus does something good and remarkable – he heals a demon-possessed man. But despite the clear benevolence of the act, his critics disapprove. They see it as proof that Jesus is an agent of evil, attributing his actions to ‘Beelzebub’. Jesus points out the obvious logical error here, explaining the self-destructive nature of internal conflict. While the critical comment was designed to cast doubt on the miracle-working rabbi, instead of allowing the criticism to undermine his work, Jesus uses it as an opportunity to promote unity. Today, may we have patience with those who misunderstand our intentions.
