Sowing the seeds of God’s love

‘Do not worry about what to eat, or drink, or wear.’ Mary of the Cross MacKillop certainly took these words to heart. She, and the widow of Zarephath in Elijah’s time, were great woman of faith. Both heavily relied on the providence of God. Mary told her sisters to never see a need without doing something about it. She once saw a need in the deep south of New Zealand, in Arrowtown close to Queenstown. In the second half of the 19th century, it attracted gold-seekers from around the world including many Chinese. It also attracted Mary, who visited in the last part of the century to set up a school in a miner’s cottage. She came not for the gold but to share the riches of God’s love with rural children and their families. Mary travelled vast distances, reliant on God’s providence, to sow many seeds of God’s love.
