Instruction to live by

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbour as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these.

What a succinct and beautiful encapsulation of what it is to live the Christian life – and if only we managed to do it more often than we do. Are our hearts aflame with compassion for others and our souls stilled in surrender to the Spirit? Are our minds lifted to heavenly things, not moored totally to our earthly concerns? And with what strength and conviction do we carry our faith? And what of our neighbour, who may live next door, across the street, in our suburb or city, in our state or country, the stranger who shares our common home? Let us be reminded of this, the greatest commandment, and do our best to follow it in the busy, messy and miraculous days of our lives.
