About Today Readings

Galatians 3:1-5. Blessed is the Lord God of Israel; for he has come to his people – Luke 1:69-75. Luke 11:5-13.

A new dawn has broken upon us

Instead of a psalm today we have the Canticle of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. He has been struck mute by Gabriel because he doubted the message of Elizabeth’s pregnancy. Once the child is born his tongue is released and he proclaims this magnificent canticle in praise of God and what God has done for humankind. It is good to imagine Zechariah singing this in the presence of his wife and eight-day old son. God has raised up a mighty saviour for us, remembered the holy covenant that he made with Abraham. These are the things that we should remember each day too because through the tender mercy of our God a new dawn from on high has broken upon us.
