Birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Romans 8:28-30. With delight I rejoice in the Lord – Psalm 12(13):6-7. Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23.

Joyous reflections on parenthood

Apocryphal writings reveal Joachim and Anne were overjoyed by Mary’s birth, fearing they were not pleasing God enough to be parents. Instead, they were eventually rewarded by a child free of original sin. The Lord made a promise to Mary when he chose her. She honoured him with her trust. God kept his promise. On Mary’s birthday, we joyously reflect on parenthood. Parents make a commitment to the Almighty and their children that can feel overwhelming. On Mary’s birthday we remember our Heavenly Father’s promise, merciful love, and saving help. Those blessed with parenthood share God’s love for us with their children by raising them with the same devotion Mary showed Jesus. These good parents might find they are rewarded by children who try to better the world as Mary’s son did.
