About Today Readings

St Frances of Rome

Jeremiah 17:5-10. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Psalm 1:1-4, 6. Luke 16:19-31.

Trust in the Lord

Today’s readings reflect the consistent message of Judeo-Christian teaching for thousands of years: the natural value systems of human society are the reverse of those of the kingdom of God. Riches count for nothing in the eyes of the Lord; it is better to trust in the Lord than to trust in the things of this world. The Lord, being Spirit, concentrates on the invisible realities which exist inherently in the visible and tangible: ‘I, The Lord, search the heart / And probe the mind’. Value is determined by an invisible measure. This is consistent with teachings of our faith we read elsewhere: ‘The first shall be last and the last shall be first,’ ‘Blessed are the meek . . .’, ‘He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the lowly’. Our prayer must also be consistent: that we be not swept up in the love of the tangible but rather, seek first his kingdom.
