Gift of grace

In John’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to his followers and keeps referring to the phrase, ‘a little while’, when he discusses his imminent departure. This ‘little while’ may or may not be a time to be measured chronologically, but may also be a reference to the time of the heart when it is ready to respond; when it moves from sorrow to joy. He uses the metaphor of a woman giving birth; that the pain and its memory recede once a child is born. Once this joy is there no one can take it from you. It is a gift of grace. As we go about our lives there will be times of great sorrow and misgiving, but if we have faith, after a little while the fog will lift and slowly joy will become an abiding characteristic, where we can overcome the pain of the past and look ahead with hope in the Lord.
