About Today Readings

St Denis & Cc; St John Leonardi

Malachi 3:13-20. Happy are they who hope in the Lord – Ps 1. Luke 11:5-13.

Mission in every age

The conclusion to the reading from Malachi today reads: ‘Once more you shall see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve God.’ The church remembers two saints today who served God: St Denis of Paris and St John Leonardi of Lucca and Rome. Denis is considered to be the first bishop of Paris and among the first of the French martyrs. He is often portrayed as standing in defiance holding his severed head in his hands. St John Leonardi dates to another time in church history after the Protestant Reformation. His great task was to renew the training and ministry of priests in that bruising time. Two great missionaries separated by centuries. The theme of Mission for this month’s Madonna is suitably inspired by these two saints. Mission is to be done in the Church in any age.
